Frequently asked questions

What are the character limits for major social platforms?
Common limits are 280 for X posts, 3,000 for LinkedIn posts, 2,200 for Instagram captions, 2,200 for TikTok captions, and 5,000 for YouTube descriptions. Limits change occasionally so the counter reflects current values.
Why do emoji eat through the character budget so fast?
Many emoji are encoded as surrogate pairs or sequences of multiple codepoints, so a single visible emoji counts as two or more characters. Compound emoji with skin tones or ZWJ joins are even longer.
Are hashtags and mentions counted differently?
On most platforms hashtags and @mentions count toward the same character limit as regular text. Only links are sometimes shortened to a fixed length, depending on the platform.
