Frequently asked questions
- What are the most common types of color blindness?
- Deuteranomaly (reduced green sensitivity) affects about 5% of men, followed by protanomaly (reduced red) and the rarer tritanomaly (reduced blue). Full dichromacy is much rarer than partial deficiency.
- Which color combinations should I avoid for color-blind users?
- Red and green together, especially as the only signal in charts or status indicators. Also watch blue-purple and green-brown. Always pair color with an icon, label, or pattern.
- Is color blindness covered by WCAG?
- Yes, Success Criterion 1.4.1 requires that color isn't the only way to convey information. A red error message also needs an icon, text label, or another visual cue.
