Frequently asked questions

Do priority and changefreq values still matter?
Google has publicly stated it largely ignores priority and changefreq, relying instead on its own crawl signals. Lastmod, however, is honored when it is accurate and consistently updated.
What is the maximum size of an XML sitemap?
A single sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must be no larger than 50 MB uncompressed. For larger sites, split into multiple sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index file.
Should I include noindex or redirected URLs in the sitemap?
No. Only include canonical, indexable URLs that return a 200 status. Mixing in redirects, 404s, or noindex pages wastes crawl budget and degrades the trust Google places in your sitemap.
