- Do priority and changefreq values still matter?
- Google has publicly stated it largely ignores priority and changefreq, relying instead on its own crawl signals. Lastmod, however, is honored when it is accurate and consistently updated.
- What is the maximum size of an XML sitemap?
- A single sitemap can contain up to 50,000 URLs and must be no larger than 50 MB uncompressed. For larger sites, split into multiple sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index file.
- Should I include noindex or redirected URLs in the sitemap?
- No. Only include canonical, indexable URLs that return a 200 status. Mixing in redirects, 404s, or noindex pages wastes crawl budget and degrades the trust Google places in your sitemap.
