Frequently asked questions

What grade level should I aim for?
General-audience writing usually targets a US grade 7-9 reading level, which corresponds to a Flesch Reading Ease score of roughly 60-70. Technical or academic copy will score lower and that is expected.
How are syllables counted?
Syllables are estimated using vowel-group heuristics that work well for English but are imperfect for unusual words, names, and loanwords. Treat the score as a guide rather than a precise measurement.
Why did my score drop after I added more facts?
Readability formulas reward short sentences and short words, so adding multi-syllable terminology or longer sentences lowers the score even when the content improves. Aim for clarity over chasing a number.
